Versatile New ModEvo Brake From Wichita
At the International Converting Exhibition, Amsterdam, Wichita introduces ModEvo, a pneumatically actuated tension control brake that is assembled from a minimal number of modules, yet suits a diversity of tensioning applications.
The advantages of the new brake lie in the versatility of the modular system, which serves a wide range of printing and converting unwind tension needs from just a handful of parts common to the ModEvo range. This confers cost benefits, as users can upgrade installations as their needs change, while carrying a minimum of spare parts.
The ModEvo brake disc combines maximum strength with minimum weight. Available in five diameters from 250mm to 450mm, all discs are the same thickness and use the same clamping modules and actuators. Each disc can be specified with a minimum of a single module, up to the maximum number of modules that can be fitted around the disc - seven in the case of the 450mm disc. This allows torque handling capabilities ranging from a maximum of 1,026 Nm (9,080 lbf.in) for the 250mm disc, up to 4,950 Nm (43,650 lbf.in) for the 450mm disc. The disc is optimised to make the most effective use of cooling air available at slow speeds in either rotational direction, and an optional electric cooling fan is also available. The finned, die-cast aluminium clamping module houses two pairs of brake pad actuators, which produce more force than previous designs to allow higher torque ratings. Three friction pad types are offered and may be mixed within a single brake assembly to match machine requirements precisely. Friction pads can be changed quickly without dismantling the module.
