New Tools for Wichita
Wichita recently acquired two Fellows gear shapers, one from the U.K. and one from the U.S.A. The first machine, sourced in Charlotte, North Carolina, was built in 1942, originally for making gear rings for tank turrets! The second machine came from Wales and was built in 1975.
Intended not only to replace some of our existing machines but to increase our capacity to shape larger diameter gears, these new acquisitions have caused a lot of excitement at the Bedford facility, representing new investment in the site and improving our manufacturing capabilities.
Although - as you can see – unloading and moving them presented quite a challenge. Eventually the large crane and forklift were able to manoeuvre them into position, but that was an easy task compared to cleaning and reconditioning them. After many painstaking hours of deconstruction and refurbishment they’re looking brand new. With new controls, new guards and new electricals to bring up to modern specifications, these machines are shaping gears again after long periods gathering rust.
And by improving our manufacturing capabilities, we’re increasing our on-time delivery rates and avoiding potential delays caused by production problems.
