Smooth service visit saves Corus time and money.
Corus recently re-commissioned a blanking line at their steelworks in Port Talbot in Wales. They contacted Wichita to help refurbish a Low Inertia (LI) brake and a Standard Ventilated clutch which had been installed on this line over fifty years ago. Unused for ten of those years, most clutches or brakes would require direct replacement - but not Wichita units. So when Corus used the LI brake, we weren’t at all surprised that it still functioned, even if noisily. The Standard Ventilated worked too, but although both were still running, they clearly needed some attention from one of our Wichita service engineers.
After identifying the problem - a damaged hub in the brake and worn parts in the clutch - replacement parts were sourced, machined and dispatched to Corus within 24 hours. Both units were up and running after just 36 hours!
During the refurbishment process, the LI air tube was also removed and replaced, although it still worked without leaking. Amazingly, it turned out to be the original tube from when the unit was commissioned, and had been in use for over forty years without any problems. In this instance, the metal parts had deteriorated before the rubber parts failed – yet another testament to the longevity of Genuine Wichita Air tubes.
Corus Engineers were amazed at the speed and efficiency with which the work was completed. Normally a LI hub would take two weeks to be machined, but with the urgency of the job and because of the quick thinking of our Service Engineer, the work was completed way ahead of schedule.
