A Capital Investment for Wichita
After a great deal of planning and preparation, Wichita has replaced one of its biggest machines, an Asquith machining centre. This versatile unit is capable of creating an engine block from a single section of steel, but has mostly been used with a central chuck in a rotary drilling capacity. After years of niggling mechanical problems the decision was taken to replace it – much to the delight of our engineers and operators.
But even in a factory as large as our Bedford site, this is no mean feat. To fit in the replacement, a Hartford Dual-Y machining centre, a large area of the shop floor - including all the existing machines - had to be rearranged. Heavy duty concrete foundations were laid and carefully cut to accommodate the new arrival. In addition, a new doorway had to be cut in the factory wall, and a new roller blind installed. Last but not least, a new four ton crane was installed to allow the operators to move the metal parts around the new cell safely.
The Hartford Dual-Y will grant Wichita greater manufacturing flexibility, allowing us to machine more of our parts quickly and reliably.
