Marine clutch design brings freedom of choice
Power transmission systems specialist Wichita is to launch an innovative design of marine clutch at November’s Europort 2001 international maritime exhibition. A pneumatic, dry-friction, multi-plate unit designated MSV/BRG, the new clutch incorporates an adaptor interface carrying an integrated support bearing, enabling the clutch to connect to equipment via many different coupling types.
The new MSV/BRG marine clutch is suited to main propulsion drives, dredge pumps and thruster applications using shaft-to-shaft or flange-to-shaft couplings. Wichita’s marine and offshore applications specialist, Roeland van der Kuil, and the Wichita engineering team in Bedford, England conducted three years of development and testing to perfect the design, which offers compatibility with most types of coupling as a result. This presents both practical and commercial advantages - a purchaser can source the ideal coupling for his application, rather than relying on the clutch manufacturer’s choice, and can buy it direct from his preferred coupling supplier.
The multi-plate design of MSV/BRG enables a small diameter clutch to transmit high torque, and the low friction radius permits higher engagement speeds than are possible with a dry-friction cone or drum clutch of equivalent rating. In operation, grooved friction linings assist ventilation and removal of wear debris, and the slotted centre plates withstand high thermal loadings. All service components, including the bearing, are removable without demounting the clutch unit from the shaft line.
The clutch is available with integral pneumatic and electric controls for standalone operation, which simplifies installation and improves reliability. Additional safety control features, such as slip detection and speed detection, can be incorporated to protect both the clutch and the machinery it drives.
Wichita MSV/BRG marine clutches are designed and manufactured within a DIN/ISO accredited quality environment and can be supplied fully approved to the requirements of the main ship classification societies. A brochure providing comprehensive performance and selection data is available on request.
